Information for Instructors
Through the UC Davis Open Campus Program, members of the public may enroll in select UC Davis courses on a space-available basis. For Open Campus enrollment policies and deadlines, see:
Instructor Responsibilities
Instructors must first accommodate all regularly enrolled UC Davis students before approving Open Campus enrollments. By approving an Open Campus request, the instructor certifies that no regularly enrolled UC Davis student has been denied access to the course.
If demand from Open Campus students exceeds available space, instructors should consult their department regarding any established enrollment priorities or policies.
Instructor’s Approval Requirements
Most courses in the Colleges of Letters & Science, Biological Sciences, and Agricultural & Environmental Sciences require only the instructor’s approval for Open Campus enrollment.
The following courses require two signatures—instructor approval* and dean or department chair approval**:
- College of Engineering courses.
- MGB 011A, MGB 011B.
- Courses numbered 098, 198, 298, & 398.
- All Chemistry courses containing a lab, including:
- CHE 002A–C, CHE 004A–C, CHE 008B, CHE 104, CHE 105, CHE 115, CHE 118B–C, CHE 124L, CHE 125, CHE 129A–C, CHE 130B, CHE 135, CHE 145.
* Signature acquired electronically via Docusign.
** Signature acquired by CPE Open Campus staff and contacts within each department as requested.
Courses Not Available Through Open Campus
Open Campus enrollment is not available for:
- Credit by examination.
- Special Study, Individual Study, or Research courses with numbers 99, 199, 299, or 399.
- School of Medicine professional courses; any series 300 or 400 course.
- School of Veterinary Medicine professional courses; any series 300 or 400 course.
- Law School courses.
- Graduate School of Management courses, except MGT 011A & B.
- Mathematics courses: MAT B, C, & MAT D.
- Applied Study of Music courses: MUS 130, MUS 131.
- Health Informatics courses: MHI 211, MHI 215.
Prerequisites & Restrictions
Students requesting enrollment in the following courses must meet qualifying or placement requirements:
- CHE 002A, CHE 002AH.
- MAT 012, 017A, 019A, 021A.
Additional college, division, or departmental restrictions may apply. Departments may also limit when instructor approvals can be granted. Consult your department regarding course-specific restrictions.
Supporting Open Campus Students
Open Campus students should be allowed to participate in courses as fully as regularly enrolled students. UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education coordinates Open Campus students to garner a campus:
- Computing account; access to the course learning platforms occurs after the enrollment process is completed.
- Library card.
Open Campus students appear as “Guest” students in the grade submission system, possibly shown with CPE’s student ID that begins with an X.
Final grades should be submitted through the standard Final Grade Submission process. Any grading issues can be addressed via email.
Note that Open Campus students may not automatically appear on class email distribution lists or other Banner-generated rosters as CPE’s SIS is separate.
Units and grade points earned through Open Campus may be applied toward admission or readmission to undergraduate or graduate programs at UC Davis. Students should work with their campus academic advisors to verify this before enrollment.
