Terms used in the Internal Transcript Guide.
AB-540. This is in reference to a California State Assembly Bill passed in 2001 that allows students who graduated high school in California and attended a high school in California for more than three years, to be considered residents for tuition purposes—regardless of other factors. For more information see:
ACT. American College Testing Exam. Taken by students in High School.
AP Credit. This is credit that students receive for taking Advanced Placement tests in High School. A chart detailing AP Credit articulation may be found in the UC Davis General Catalog.
Banner. "Banner is the UC Davis Student Information System that gives the university administrators access to and control of student information. It holds student record information in a centralized database. The system controls, organizes and keeps secure the student data, admission information, course enrollment, final grades, and financial aid. Banner user accounts are issued upon request from the Office of University Registrar" (UC Davis IET).
Cancellation. Cancellation is a term used for when a student withdraws from a term before instruction starts.
Carnegie Unit Rule. UC Davis units are assigned based on this rule. Basic formula: 1 unit equals 1 hour of lecture, or 2 hours lab with homework, or 3 hours lab without homework.
Catalog. A shorthand term for the UC Davis General Catalog, published every year.
Commencement. Commencement refers to the ceremony celebrating student graduation. Students should be aware that attending commencement does not mean, in and of itself, that they have graduated—students must still meet all degree requirements and file to graduate. Undergraduate students may file to graduate online.
DD-214. Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
DD-295. Application for the Evaluation of Learning Experiences During Military Service.
DS2019. Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status.
ENWS. Discontinued notation given to students who did not present work subject to grading. The discontinuation was not retroactive and so ENWS notations issued before fall 2012 will remain in effect, unchanged, and behave the same as before. ENWS notations do appear on a student's internal record but do not appear on their official transcript.
EOP. Equal Opportunity Program is a program that helps first-generation, low-income students strengthen their academic skills to meet the demands of a research university.
FERPA. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education (FERPA website).
F-1. A type of student visa (More on student visas).
GE3. This is a shorthand reference to the newest iteration of the UC Davis General Education ("GE") requirements, which went into effect Fall Quarter 2011. They are called "GE3" because they represent the third iteration of UC Davis GE requirements. See also General Education.
GMAT. Graduate Management Admission Test. This test is administered by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC).
GPA. Grade Point Average (GPA) is the numeric measure of a student's average performance in all letter-graded courses completed. Details of these terms can be found on the Official Transcript Page.
GRE. Graduate Record Examination.
IB Credit. This is credit that students receive for taking International Baccalaureate tests in High School. A chart detailing IB Credit articulation may be found in the UC Davis General Catalog.
IGETC. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that California community college students may complete to satisfy the lower-division breadth/general education requirements before transfer to the California State University and some colleges and majors at UC campuses (IGETC website).
Incomplete Grade. See Davis Division bylaw A540(C). Lifecycle of an Incomplete Grade.
Late-action. A term used for an action (withdrawal, drop, add, unit change, etc.) that occurs after a deadline but before a term ends. For actions taken after a term ends, see Retroactive Action (below).
MCAT. Medical College Admissions Test. This test is administered by the Medical College Application Service (MCAS).
Pass One/Pass Two
Students have two opportunities to enroll in each regular academic term—Registration Pass One and Two. These times are assigned according to the number of units that the student has completed. Individual student registration pass-times may be found in SISWeb.
PELP. The Planned Educational Leave Program allows any continuing undergraduate or graduate level student to temporarily suspend academic work at UC Davis.
Remedial Units. Remedial units will not be given baccalaureate credit. See 761. Remedial Courses (En 9 Mar 83).
Retroactive Action. A term used for an action (grade changes, withdrawal, drop, add, unit change, etc.) that occurs after a term ends. See also, Retroactive Actions.
SAT. Scholastic Aptitude Test. Taken by students in High School.
Schedule Builder. Schedule Builder (formerly SISWeb) is the web-based class planning and registration tool that allows you to plan your class schedule and register for classes in the upcoming term all in one place.
Subject A. This is an old term for the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) that is still used.
Term in Residence. "Residence in any regular term is validated by a program of courses or other exercises approved by the Faculty of a student's college or school. For undergraduates this shall be at least six units of resident courses of instruction. Graduate students validate residence with programs of instruction or research approved by the appropriate Graduate Council" (UC System-wide Academic Senate).
TOEFL. Test of English as a Foreign Language.
Qualitative Standing. At the end of each term, a qualitative academic standing calculation is done. This is calculated based on both term GPA and overall GPA - both of which can have a bearing on a student's academic standing. For more information see the requirements in the student's individual college.
Quantitative Standing. Minimum Progress. At the end of each term, a Minimum Progress Average (MPA) calculation and a Degree Progress Average (DPA) calculation are done in Banner and notated at the end of the term on the internal transcript. These notations appear just below the course schedule for that term and are calculated after grades are finalized for that term. These notations do not appear on official transcripts.
Withdrawal. Withdrawal is a term used for when a student withdraws from a term after instruction starts.
