Automated Prerequisite Checking

Starting with winter 2017 registration, Schedule Builder checked to see if students had completed the required prerequisites for College of Engineering courses.

For spring 2017 registration, Schedule Builder checked to see if students have completed the required prerequisites for College of Engineering and College of Biological Sciences courses.

For fall 2017 registration, Schedule Builder will check to see if students have completed the required prerequisites for all courses.

This automated function prevents registration in a class unless the system finds an adequate prerequisite course has been taken or an instructor-approved petition is on file. It will be important to do some research before Pass One registration time arrives. Preliminary work will prevent delays during registration pass times.

Instructors have the right to ask students to drop a class if they have not completed the appropriate prerequisites. At the request of the instructor, the Office of the University Registrar will drop a student who has not completed the appropriate prerequisites. Refer to the General Catalog and the General Catalog Supplement to determine course prerequisites.

Prerequisite Petition

Submit a Prerequisite Petition through Schedule Builder if the system does not recognize that the prerequisite is satisfied. Otherwise, you will not be able to enroll in the course.

A petition is not needed if you are currently enrolled in a class that is a prerequisite for a class you would like to enroll in for the next term. If you later fail to meet the prerequisites, you can submit a prerequisite petition.

If you think you have completed all of the prerequisites, you can provide an explanation on the petition along with supporting documentation and submit it for evaluation. The instructor will decide if you provided sufficient evidence to satisfy the prerequisite. If the instructor requires additional information, he/she can email you. Once the instructor has made a decision on your petition, an email notification will be sent to you. Any questions or concerns in regards to the status of your prerequisite petition should be directed to your instructor.

Pending Petition

Your petition will have a pending status until a final decision is made by your instructor.

Though a petition will allow you to enroll in the course, there still is the possibility of being dropped from the course if the instructor decides you have not met the prerequisite and denies your petition.

If your petition is still pending past the 20-day drop deadline, contact your professor for any questions or concerns. 

Approved Petition

If your petition is approved and you are registered for the course, no further action is necessary.

For wait-listed students, an approved petition will make you eligible to take the course, but you must still be moved from the wait list into the class in order to be registered.

Denied Petition

If your petition is denied, you will be dropped from the course/waitlist. After a Prerequisite Petition has been denied, any requests to add this course will have to be approved by the instructor via Permission to Add (PTA) number.
