UC Davis General Catalog 1999-2000

About the cover:

The horse as a UC Davis symbol dates back to 1921, when the U.S. Army brought a stud Thoroughbred son of Man o' War named Gunrock to campus to supply high-quality stock for the cavalry. Aggie students chose for their mascot a mustang to honor Gunrock's fame. The Aggie nickname, too, was informally adopted in the 1920s.

In the fall of 1998, UC Davis began considering the design of a family of athletic marks that would, for the first time in campus history, consistently identify all campus sports teams, cheerleaders and spirit squads. It was hoped that the new marks would create a sense of identity and unity and encourage enthusiasm for the campus and its successful NCAA Division II athletic program. A committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni representatives advised consulting firm SME Design Inc. on the marks' creation and design, and the new set of marks was approved by the campus and unveiled in May 1999.
